Are Veneers Right For Me?

Veneers are a versatile cosmetic treatment that can enhance your smile if minor chips, gaps, misshapen teeth or disolorations are keeping you from a confident grin. If you’re looking into cosmetic dentistry in West Lafayette, our team wants to help you discover and decide on the right options for you. Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re considering veneers:

1. Minor vs. Major Cosmetic Issues

To be a good candidate for veneers, you’ll need to be in good overall oral health. This means your mouth must be free from issues like cavities and infected teeth, or untreated gum disease. If you want to have veneers, these underlying oral health problems must be addressed prior to placement.

Veneers can be used to treat some minor orthodontic cases like slightly gapped or crooked teeth, but for more severe issues, you may want to consider Invisalign before you start looking into treatment with veneers.

2. Veneers Are a Permanent Cosmetic Treatment

Traditional veneers require the removal of about 0.5mm of enamel from your teeth to prepare for veneers, so they are not typically reversible. In some cases, Dr. Ventresca can use minimal prep veneers, which are very thin and require the removal of less tooth enamel. These veneers can sometimes be removed in the future, but this is not always a guarantee.

3. Teeth Grinding or Bruxism

If you grind your teeth, suffer from acid reflux, or have a malpositioned bite, it’s important to seek treatment for this issue before you have veneers placed. This will ensure that your veneers last as long as possible and that they aren’t worn down from excessive force or pressure.

4. Tobacco Use

Veneers are a great way to cover up stains and cosmetic imperfections caused by tobacco use, such as chewing tobacco and smoking. However, if you use tobacco and are not going to quit after you get your veneers, this treatment may not be right for you.

While your veneers are very stain-resistant, the natural enamel of your surrounding is not. If you continue to use tobacco, your smile will become stained again. We highly recommend that you cease smoking and tobacco use before you begin to consider veneers from West Lafayette Dental Studio.
